The Gunn Green Team was featured in the Palo Alto Weekly Nov. 21. Read the article, "Green is the new black" here.
The Gunn Green Team was formed in November 2006 and is a group of students, teachers, staff, and community members. The team is the first official Green Team formed in the Palo Alto Unified School District under the new Sustainability Strategy. Even though Gunn is a certified Green business, the Gunn Green Team recognizes that there are many areas for improvement.
For example, Gunn spent over $70,000 last year in waste removal. A key focus for Gunn this school year is to reduce trash volume at Gunn by at least 30%. Our success is not only important for our environment but reduces Gunn’s operating costs as well.
The team also plans to:
- further increase alternative commuting to school and school activities
- decrease energy consumption
- build a sustainable culture at Gunn through awareness and education
- teach students and staff members to avoid waste in the first place,
- ensuring that recycling takes place during school events
- ensuring that waste reduction is built into the planning processes of all activities at Gunn such as fundraisers, parties, and sporting events.
The Gunn Green Team meets on the first Monday of every month in the library from 3:15 to 4:15. The next meeting is Monday, December 3. Those interested in joining the team should email gunngreenteam@gmail.com.
