About Green Gunn

Green Gunn is a coalition of groups dedicated to improving sustainability at Henry M. Gunn Senior High School in Palo Alto, California.

Gunn became a certified Santa Clara County Green Business in spring of 2005. Check out the Green Business Implementation Plan the school used to become certified.

Gunn is well-known for it's GO-FAST (Gunn Organization For Alternative Safe Transportation) program and won a merit award from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission in 2006. Parent volunteers from the Pedal for Prizesgroup reward students who bike to school with treats and raffles. Students can buy discounted bus VTA bus passes at Gunn or ride a free shuttle to and from school.

TheGunn Green Teamis another environmental group on campus, comprised of students, parents, teachers, administrators and community members. The group meets monthly to work on further greenifying the Gunn campus. It's focus this year is on waste and recycling.

There are also student groups at Gunn dedicated to sustainability and environmental education.  Members of the Organic Garden Club meet weekly at the Gunn Garden to water and care for the organic crops and flowers they grow. They also occasionally sell fresh produce to students and staff.

The three-year-old Gunn Environmental Club is another student group, comprised of about a dozen students that meet weekly during lunch. The Environmental Club focuses on teaching students about simple things they can do to reduce their environmental impact, like using a reusable water bottle or cloth bags at the grocery store. The Environmental Club is instrumental in planning the bi-annual Green Assembly as well as various events other throughout the year, including the Green Holiday Fair in December.

The two groups come together each year to plan Earth Week, an annual celebration that takes place in April and may include demonstrations, films, or speakers.

There is also a Green Chair on SEC (the Student Executive Council) who works to bring environmental ideas to the council. This year's Green Chair is junior Sera Boerger.
